Temple History
This temple is one of the ancient Vishnu temples in TamilNadu which is around 1400 years old. Moolavar the Main Deity is Lord Sri Ranganathaswamy and His Consort Sri Ranganayaki Thayar. Sri Ranganathaswamy is in reclining posture (Sayana Thirukolam) along with Sridevi and Bhoodevi Thayars sitting next to the Lord. We can also take dharshan of Utchavar Sri RanganathaSwamy as Azhagiya Manavala Swamy with Sridevi and Bhoodevi Thayars. Devi Sri Vishnu Durgai is present in Ranganathaswamy Shrine blessing the devotees.
Sri Ranganayaki Thayar is in the separate Shrine. Thayar is so graceful in sitting posture ( Amarntha Thirukolam) and is 8 feet height. There is separate shrine for Sri Sita Devi sametha Sri KodhandaRamar. Here Lord Sri Rama blesses the devotees in a standing posture (Nindra Thirukolam) along with Thayar Sita Pirati with Lakshmanar and Sri Anjaneyaswamy. There is a separate Shrine for Sri Andal where Nachiyar is in standing posture (Nindra Thirukolam) and is around 6 feet height, beautifully facing towards the Lord. We can take dharshan of Chakrathazhwar in separate shrine.
The king 2nd Kulothunga Chola who was ruling Thiruvathigai (Athikapuri King ) built this temple for Sri Ranganathaswamy and Sri Ranganayaki Thayar. As the king wanted to marry Chola King Pallavaraya's daughter who is a great devotee of Sri Ranganathaswamy and Thayar and wanted to stay in SriRangam to have Lord's and Mother's darshan daily, he built this beautiful temple for Lord and Thayar so the Princess will not miss the darshan of the Lord and Mother. In the later period the temple was maintained by Ranganatha palayakar.
